The above picture is off one of the cottages in Beecholme.
Let us think back to 1963,the government decided that it was time to reorganise and develop local government. By increasing the size of each borough and transferring different parts of the London County Council current responsibilities to the newly enlarged 32 London Boroughs.
As part of this change the Children's homes currently under the auspices of the London County Council will be transferred to the new councils,So a batch of homes including those from outside London will be transferred to Wandsworth,Including one of the larger cottage homes (Beecholme).
After 1965 and the final transfer of obligations, five other councils including Wandsworth were sent to Beecholme, but the homes demise had already been decided and so it was that after 1968,only children from Wandsworth were sent to the home. Also at this time the Cottages begun to be emptied as less and less children were sent to the home.
The extent of the Abuse off children at Beecholme was unknown at this time and isolated incidents were reported, with some members of staff facing sanctions and legal action y the police. These were isolated incidents and in the main, each child was at the mercy of senior staff from Beecholme and other homes.
Let us rush forward to 2018 and the decision of Wandsworth Council to deny Justice and Compensation to Survivors. We were not responsible, this is the Wandsworth line at present and this is where our fight must continue.
